Bespoke emergency lighting solution for historic London hall

Date added 01.01.21

When commercial lighting specialists, Silent Design were commissioned by The Carpenters’ Company to undertake a challenging lighting refurbishment at the historic Carpenters’ Hall, they turned to London-based Prime Light to deliver a bespoke emergency lighting solution. Here we find out more.

Receiving its first Royal Charter in 1477, The Carpenters’ Company has a long and prestigious history in central London. In 2020 they approached commercial lighting and controls specialists, Silent Design (link to https://www.silent.design/) to undertake a lighting refurbishment at one of its most prominent buildings as John Bowden, owner of Silent Design explains:

“We thrive on delivering bespoke solutions for interesting buildings and the lighting refurbishment at Carpenters’ Hall was a great example of this. The hall is an impressive event space with a room height of around eight metres and a uniquely carved ceiling. This posed some specific challenges for us when it came to emergency lighting as we needed high output recessed emergency lighting for the main hall, but we also needed some additional units in an annexed area that would not only meet our safety requirements but that would also look aesthetically pleasing. With this in mind we approached Prime Light who were able to offer their expertise and provide the solutions we needed.”

Based on Silent Design’s specifications, Prime Light recommended and supplied the TM Technologie Ontec C for the main hall. This self-contained standalone emergency lighting luminaire contains a PCB board that drives and powers the unit, a battery pack and an LED light source. The product is not unusual in terms of its shape, size and function, however the difference is that the variant of the Ontec C range used in this installation delivers a very high output of over 500 lumens, so it was ideal to meet the client needs. Ben Williams, Business Development Manager for emergency lighting at Prime Light explains:

“The Ontec C product range provides us with flexibility to do so many applications with its range of 5 specially designed distribution optics and multiple tiers of lumen outputs. This wasn’t a standard installation, John and the team needed a product that not only met legal requirements of providing emergency lighting on the floor in the event of a mains failure, but gave them something where the products provided the extra reassurance of quality, safety and compliance given by globally recognised credentials like ENEC and Kitemark. I’ve yet to come across a project that the Ontec product range doesn’t have a solution for, it really does have something for every installation or application you come across.”

The replacement of emergency lighting at Carpenters’ Hall was part of a wider lighting refurbishment undertaken by Silent Design. Both the end customer and the team at Silent Design were delighted with the outcome of the project, as John Bowden concludes:

“Prime Light have established a really good range of emergency lighting and I really appreciate that when my clients turn to me for solutions, I can reach out to Ben or one of the other team to find me a product that meets those requirements. They respond quickly and are really knowledgeable, so this provides a lot of reassurance.”

With almost 30 years in the business Prime Light prides itself on the quality of its expertise, its strong product range and the quality of its products. Over the past 12 months they have bolstered their offering in particular areas of growth, including emergency lighting, by appointing specialists such as Ben Williams and teaming up with leading manufactures like TM Technologie.
